Benefits of skipping rope
There are multiple benefits to jumping rope -- fat loss, endurance, strength, and performance - and it's one of the most portable workouts around. Just grab your rope, find a few feet of open area, and start sweating. Below are 10 reasons why you should jump rope for fitness and make it a staple of your workout routine.
- Efficiency: According to a study in Science Daily, jumping rope can help you burn over 1,000 calories an hour, making it one of the most efficient forms of cardio exercise. To put it in simpler terms, 10 minutes of jumping rope can roughly be considered the equivalent of running an eight-minute mile.
- Improved Cardiovascular Health: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers jumping rope to be a vigorous-intensity activity, and improved cardio health can be achieved by jumping rope for 15 minutes a day, five times a week.
- Improved Bone Density: The act of jumping rope create a force on the bones that promotes growth and strength.
- More Muscle Activation: A jump rope will work your calf muscles, quads, hamstrings, glutes, abs, oblique muscles, forearms, biceps, triceps, shoulders, back muscles, and chest muscles.
- Increased Agility: Proper jump rope form helps you develop quick footwork, speed, power, and agility.
- Better Coordination: Jumping rope can be difficult for beginners. But as you learn the rhythm of jump rope, coordination will improve in your eyes, feet, hands, arms, legs, and torso.
- Improved Balance: Maintaining proper balance is one of the keys to jump roping, as your body needs to re-establish balance with each skip.
- Meditative Qualities: In order to build up to long periods of unbroken skips, you must keep your mind in the present moment. When you enter a state of flow with your jump rope, everything else that’s clouding your mind just slips away. It’s just you and your rope.
- Improved Overall Wellbeing: The benefits are not just physical. Jumping rope has been shown to improve quality of sleep, productivity, and mental sharpness while helping reduce stress and anxiety.
- It's fun: More than anything, jumping rope is fun. There's a reason many kids pick it up at a young age. Whether mastering the basics or learning new techniques like crisscrosses and double unders, jumping rope is a fun and versatile workout.
